Actually 'Portland' is not a brand name. An English mason called Joseph Aspdin was one of the persons who first realized that the quality of cement (and therefore the quality of concrete) can be controlled and improved by proportioning and burning the raw materials. He named his product "Portland cement" since it resembled a highly prized building stone quarried on the Isle of Portland in the southern coast of England.
