The hydration of cement produces significant amounts of calcium hydroxide which does not contribute to the strength. In the presence of pulverized-fuel ash, later strength can be enhanced by pozzolanic reaction, which is a reaction between cementitious materials in pulverized-fuel ash and free calcium oxide released from hydration of cement.
